Applied Psychology - Human Trafficking
"Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior" (McLeod, 2011). The field of psychology is important to humanity because it helps humanity develop and evolve. Without psychology, I believe that humanity would not know how to fix their wrongs to rights. Psychology allows us to study the wrongs and gives us the opportunity to improve or fix the wrongs. Psychology helps improve humanity in a positive way. You can say that psychology somewhat studies the flaws of humanity to come up with solutions for them.
Three concepts that explain the root causes of human trafficking are deindividuation, conformity, frustration-aggression hypothesis. Deindividuation is a psychological state occuring in group members that results in loss of individuality and a tendency to do things not normally done when alone. Deindividuation can be a root cause for human tarfficking because when human traffickers are all together in a group, it is all about buisness. They want to cut deals between each other or with their buyers. When the human traffickers are together, they are a group of human traffickers, not individual human traffickers. When alone, it can cross their mind that morally, selling people and forcing them into cheap labor and forced sex is NOT okay. When a huma trafficker is alone, these thoughts can get to them, but when they are around other dealers, they are more encouraged to be tough and have a tough mindset that is not vulnerable to those thoughts. Conformity is changing one's behavior or beliefs to match those of others, generally a result of real or imagined though unspoken, group pressure. Conformity can be a root cause of human trafficking because by conforming, people start to accept that human trafficking okay. People start to believe that it is okay to sell others and make a profit out of them so that they can be forced into labor or sex. Since they see other human traffickers doing and making profit, people start to think "if they are doing it, then why aren't I?" Soon when everyone is involved in human trafficking, it is uncomfortable to NOT conform so people start to just "go with the flow." They get pressured into human trafficking dealing because they do not want to speak out or be the outkast. The frustration-aggression hypothesis is a proposition that frustration always leads to some form of aggressive behavior. In human trafficking, this theory can help explain the behavior of the huma traffickers. Even though everyone might not agree, human trafficking is an aggressive act. People are forced into doing things that they do not want to do and later mistreated and not treated like human beings, but dogs. There is physical and mental abuse involved. This theory can be somewhat a justification for the human traffickers. Their frustration and the need to make money leads to them becoming dealers. They justify it in their head as okay because it benefits themin the end. The frustration that they have they take it out in form of aggression whether physically or mentally on the people being trafficked.
Three concepts that help alleviate, reduce, and/or solve the problem of human trafficking can be the psychoanalysis method for the human traffickers, cognitive-behavior therapy for the human traffickers as well, and group therapy for the victims. The psychoanalysis is a method of psychotherapy that seeks to help clients gain insight by recognizing and understanding unconscious thoughts and emotions. This would be good therapy for the humann traffickers and would allow for the problem to be reduced somewhat. At this therapy, he traffickers would not be thinking about making the profit, but about why they are actually dealing humans like drugs and treating them like dogs. This therapy would allow for the therapist to get inside their heads and have them think about the real reason why they are dealing humans and make them feel somewhat guilty so they can realize that this is an issue and that it should stop. Cognitive-behavior theory for the human traffickers would work to reduce the problem and potentially solve the problem as well. The Cognitive-behavior theory is learning-based treatment methods that help clients change the way they think, as well as the way that they behave. This could be beneficial towards the human traffickers to help them stop human trafficking because there are methods that are actually going to allow them to stop and think about what they are doing. The therapist can offer advice on better behavior than selling people and better way to think about making money other than dealing people like drugs. Group therapy could be for the victims of human trafficking and can help alleviate them. Group therapy is psychotherapy involving several unrealted clients. Group therapy allows the victims to realize that they are not alone. Group therapy helps them realize that other people are victims of human trafficking and have gone through similar experiences as them. During this therapy, united they can gain confidence and build it to a point where they feel unstopable and alleviated. The victims can feel like they are the ones that are in control of their own lives now and stand up now only for themselves, but other victims and help work against human trafficking.
The field of psychology can change the world in a positive way. As I have previously stated, the field of psychology helps improve the flaws of humanity. Around the world, there are many problems that can be solved with psychology. For example, let's take the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. It was stated that Adam Lanza, the shooter, had psychological problems. Here is where psychology can help us turn the world more positive. If we study the mind and the behavior of Adam Lanza, we can come up with solutions to help prevent situations like Sandy Hook shooting from happening. Another example could be the illness of schizophrenia. When the field of psychology can helps us study the mind and behavior or schizophrenics, we can come up with solutions to help other schizophrenics with their illness and try and cure them, but this can be with any other illness as well of course. This year from taking AP Psychology, I would have to say that a major takeaway would be learning new terms. I learned mostly everything about the brain and how it works. What I really enjoyed about this takeaway as well is that now when we talk about psychology I can actually understand what a student or teacher is saying. For example if they talk about the brain or an illness and why it is the way it is I can proudly engage in the conversation and have knowledge of what is being said.
